Chapter 3 Pawn Essay
Written by Kelly Snyder.
Beckwith is a pawn of white supremacy, he shot Evers, he believes whites are better and thinks civil rights are a threat to his community's existence. This is similar to the Jews and Hitler. However, in the case of Hitler those who followed and supported him were the pawns. It seems as though Beckwith had been in a way brainwashed by the whites to think the things he did. Either he was brainwashed or raised in a family of white supremacists who bought him to think the way he did. Hitler, on the other hand, was the one who executed the brainwashing; it didn't take much work to get people to believe him. Beckwith being a white supremacist killed Evers because he was such and Evers was black. Because Beckwith was a white supremacist it would be apposite to say white supremacy was the death of Evers. Although Beckwith held the gun he was merely a pawn used by white supremacy take the life of someone white supremacists hated, a black man. The same in Hitler's case, his pawns or followers killed the Jews for Hitler. Hitler encouraged the killing of the Jews but left the actually killings for his pawns. White supremacy employed Beckwith as one of the many pawns drawn into this way of life, just like Hitler drew people into the Nazi way of life.
