Jeff Annis- Bob Dylan Essay, Whats a pawn? -Tyler Smith
What is a pawn? A pawn is a mindless foot soldier who wouldnt think twice about giving his life for a greater cause.Byron de la Beckwith was a pawn when he killed Medgar Evers. Dylan says that Beckwith was not free to make his own decision because of all his outside influence. Like a pawn on a chess board, Beckwith was put out on the Front-Line with no regard to his safety. They brainwashed him into thinking that, that was the only way to be accepted by his group. Dylan believes you cant blame him for his actions. I dont agree with that because I think everyone should be held responsible for their actions. Even though he was put in a rough sport he still ultimately killed Evers and cant blame anyone else. Just Because Beckwith had people behind him that were encouraging him, he should have realized that indeed he was being a pawn, protecting his higher-ups from receiving the conviction.
