Kelly Snyder ch3
To say Byron de la Beckwith is a pawn would be correct in the sense that hwe fulfills sll three aspects that a pawn would have. Beckwith was a poor white man during the time of slavery and having that title would make him fulfill one of three aspects of being a pawn. Beckwith was in both the 'in-group' and in the 'out-group' seeing as he was in the 'in-group' because he was a white man and in the 'out-group' because he was poor. He could be in both groups and that makes it possible for him to become a pawn because he is confused as to group is correct for him. Because he is in two different groups, his perception is limited because he does not know which side as to fill out his expectations for, thus making him want to become one of the 'in-group'. His limited perception causes the third aspect to happen, the attacks on him that will change how he will view life because he wants to fulfill the expectations of one group only. The circumstances have broughtBeckwith to his situation, where he is caught between the whites and the blacks and he is attacked so that he will be used as a pawn against those of the blacks. He is expendable and the king and queen donot care as to what will become of him, whereas he believes they do care. Beckwith was pressured into Medgar Evers, making him a pawn between the to kings, the white and black . He is only a weapon and his king will use hinm and the other pawns until he can reach his goal against the black . Byron de la Beckwith was merely a pawn that was brainwashed int Medgar Evers. The one who really kille Medgar Evers were the white , which were using Beckwith as their weapon so they could escape the blame. Beckwith cannot be blamed because he was a pawn in a bad situation. Him being born as a poor white person was a matter of mmoral bad luck, it was for him to become a pawn. The who pulled the trigger on Medgar Evers was Beckwith, but the one who was controlling him was then white , making Beckwith a pawn in their of chess.
