The "Spirit-Spout" comes from a dillusional vision of a spouting fountain of water off in the distance that the weary crew insists on seeing. Because the fountain is so majestic Ahab insists that it is the spout of Moby Dick. This causes Ahab to follow the spout for many hours, unsuccesfully of course, in the hopes that he will land the whale. Although the spout was never reached, it lifted the spirits of the crew, because they had found what they were hunting for. This lifting of the spirits is how the spout got its name "Spirit-Spout".

Is it delusional? Isn't it a touch of the numinous? 5/5
