#9 Patrick Collins

While researching Fedallah, on Questia, I found two possible meanings. One possibility comes from the Hebrew meaning, which is "ransom of God". This meaning sybolizes the possible danger that the crew could encounter on the endeavor, especially focusing on the capture of one particular whale. It is saying that the future of the crew depends on the Gods. Another meaning could come from Fedallah having the would "Allah" actually in it. Since Fedallah keeps to himself most of the time, this meaning could simbolize the disdain that Americans had for the western world during the time that the novel was written. Both arguments seemed pretty convincing to me so I included them both.

Yes. Allah is derived from the same root as the Hebrew's word for God, El. 5/5
