Ch. 51 Question by Bobby Katoli
In chapter 51 Fedallah sees a spout of water in a particular spot everday. Later, Ishmael and the crew begin to take notice of this enigmatic occurance. Ahab belives that it is Moby Dick, just out of reach to be harmed, is somewhat tantalizing them to follow it. The spirit-spout is what keeps the crew on task and zealous for hunting the great, white, Moby Dick. For Ahab, the spirit-spout is the fuel for his anger to continue his hunt. However, the spirit-spout is not just there to keep them busy. It is leading them to their destruction because it keeps egging them on toward a vehement storm. This spirit-spout brings about the monomania in Ahab. His anger blinds of the safety of the crew and himself. The spirit-spout is the inevitable, calamitious force that will bring the end to Ahab and which ultimately does just that.
