Hannah Robinson Moby Dick question #2 - Mark of Ahab

2. Research and discuss Ahab’s mark of Cain. Closely read and constellate Ahab’s major qualities.

Cain is a biblical character who kills Abel out of jealousy and envy. This envy came about because Abel's gift offered to God was better appreciated and welcome by God then Cain's gift. Since Cain killed Ahab God said he would mark Cain forever with what is infamously known as the "mark of Cain". Ahab, like Cain, has a mark of his own; Ahab's mark however is a serious of scars covering half his body. These scars were produced by nature’s wrath, proving that he could withstand even the harshest torment from the sea. This proves Ahab is a fearless captain preoccupied with revenge for Moby Dick; just like the want by Cain to take revenge on his brother.
