Ishmael archetype by Bobby katoli
A Jungian archetype is what makes up our conscious by our unconscious mind. Our unconscious archetype ultmitaley persuades the desions we make. It is dipostion we are born with no matter of what our race, culure, or background. We are born a paricular way, all of us. It is something we all share. It is our universal experiences that we concieve. Our archetype is who we are in the environment we are born into or living. Jung states that our perception of the world also makes up our archetype.
For example, Ishmael's archetype from the passages in Moby Dick are described as an outsider. Ishmael feel as the outsider on the ship among the ship's crew. Ishmael is portrayed always trying to do the right thing and be the best so Queequeg and the others can accept him so he can be one of the men. Since he feels that he always has something to prove to the crew, Ishmael lacks self confidence and doesn't speak or stand up for himself. Ishmael's cognition of the world makes himself to appear weak and never wanting to say or do anything that would make the crew feel he is not physically up to the challenge of whaling.
