Kyle Smith #1 Vertical Scheme

This vertical scheme of the Chain Of being represnts the hieracrhy of the crew of the Pequod. It displays who rules the ship and makes the decisions for whats best for the shipmates. A vertical scheme resembles the food chain, except for the fact that these people dont eat each other. Each step in the hierarchy symbolizes a role in the society of ancient times when there were kings and royalty.

Captain Ahab (will and power of the Gods/king)

First shipmates like Starbuck (merchants and others who are subject to the king)

Harpooners (Armed forces/army)

Ishmael (peasants)- In it for the adventure and are "ruled" by Ahab on the ship.
