number 1 - Moby Dick Great Chain of Being
The Great Chain of beign ranks everything we do and participate in throughout our livetimes. The beings on this ranking are ranked in accordance with importance in our world or "higher or lower" people. Microcosms are the different levels illustrated in the Chain of Being; the macrocosm however is the whole chain which represents the world. One example of an innerelation between microcosms and macrocosms, would be the Pequod, the Pequod is one small level taken out of the macrocosm, the world.
The Chain of Being on the Pequod is...
Captain Ahab - God/King
Starbuck-1st mate
Stubb-2nd mate These three represent the noble/lords of the world
Flask-3rd mate
Harpooners - Queequegt, Tashetgo, Daggo, Fedellah }Middle Class
Crew member - Pip, Ishmael }the slaves and lower class depending on how experienced or if a beginner on the ship.

Pip is at the bottom. Ishmael is above him. Fedallah is a special case, just under Ahab.
