Peqoud's Hierarchy by Corinne McConnell, Alex Wikoff and Rebecca Hall
The Peqoud represents a microcosm of the world.
The chain of being is as follows: God or the "Prime Mover" at top, followed by the angels whom are purely spirit, man who is both spirit and matter and then physical objects which are pure matter.
Captain Ahab ultimately decides the fate of the ship, sailing or "sending" the ship in the direction he chooses. Ahab is fleeting, appears rarely, and gives little explanation for his sometimes seemingly irrational decisions. The crew of the ship readily serves Ahab, helping him rage a battle against Moby Dick [evil]. Therefore, Ahab represents God.
The Harpooners, Queequeg, Tashtego, Daggoo and Fedallah, ironically all pagan savages, are the protectants of the ship. They watch out for well-being and safety of the crew as well as the physical matter of the ship. Therefore, the Harpooners might be described as angelic creatures.
The rest of the ship's crew, the men, primarily exist to serve Ahab [God]. Therefore, the ship's crew represents man in the Great Chain of Being.
Finally, the ship containing the crew is the physical matter, representing the Earth in analytical terms.
