Question 10 Kate Pennebaker

Question # 10 Spirit Spout

The spirit spout is sort of a mirage that the crew saw. It was not actually there but they were tired and delusional; they insisted on seeing a spout of water that they thought came from Moby Dick himself. Because of this image, they chased after Moby Dick and tried to get to the spout but never reached it because it was not actually there. Even though it was a figment of their imagination, it gave them hope, therefore it is called the “Spirit Spout.”

The point is that the spout is a sign of the numinous. 4/5
