QUESTION NUMBER 2 AHABS MARK BY CAILIN LOYD

2. Ahab's archetypal characteristics are distinctly similar to that of Cain in the Old Testament, in that both have physical, important scars. Ahab's unique mark, or scar, is located in a vertical line straight down the center of his body. Symbolically, the placement of this scar could pertain to Ahab's conflicting persona, often irrational behavior in some topics, and total calmness in others. He was scarred by the whale, which incidently is his first priority and about which he makes the decisions for the Pequod. Ironically, his talent and success at whaling resulted in his scar and his behavioral demise.
This can be compared to Cain in the Old Testament, who murdered his brother Abel out of envy and was consequently "marked" using a physcial scar, from God. Cain used his talent for agriculture to please God only to be disregarded and led to irrational decisions, like Ahab in that his passion for whaling left him with a full body scar and a somewhat crazy mind.
