TOTAL DOMINATION QUESTION 10 - Chapter 51
10. Chapter 51, What is the "Spirit-Spout"? You deduce this based on your reading and research you would care to do.
In Chapter 51, the "Spirit-Spout" is a ghostly spouting that appears every night. All the sailors claim to have seen it and many think that it is indeed Moby Dick, but there is never a sign of a real whale. Because of its mystery, Ishmael dubs it the "Spirit-Spout." I believe it to be a perhaps just a natural phenomenon of the ocean, especially because they are sailing on the particularly turbulent Cape of Good Hope. The crew may see it as a sign on Moby Dick leading them to destruction because they are already so preoccupied with finding the whale. They say that they fear Moby Dick and how he will destroy them , but it is almost as if they are waiting for him to appear just so they will be satisfied. I think they are reading into what they want the spout to be.
