Ch. 73- Ahab's Shadow

The shadow is seen as someone or something we feel uneasy about or in some measure repelled by, anything dark or threatening. Ahab cannot come to terms with his shadow (Fedallah), his (female) anima, and what he sees as the fearful devouring mother-whale. Fedallah's more realistic out of the two and seems to understand the whale. They are a two in one combination- "it only seemed to blend with and lengthen Ahab's(shadow)." They are bonded together with Ahab's vengeance for Moby Dick.Fedallah is always by Ahab's side and is present to help fulfill Ahab's revenge. Their souls are bounded together by hate.
