Ch 93- Alissa Davis

Pip, as a replacement oarsman in Stubb's boat, becomes frightened by the whale they had almost captured and his first instinct is to jump overboard. Since the crew had to let the whale go in order to save Pip, they are not very happy with him and said next time they would not save him. Well, he jumps overboard again and they decide to leave him there. After they eventually rescued him, his shipmates observe that he has gone insane after being left alone in the vast immensity of the sea. However, Ishmael is so drawn to the sea and seems to have a sense of the sea that leads him to understand that Pip had encountered the divine mysteries of the sea, and this is the source of his "insanity." The sea is described as a "heartless immensity" that seemed to steal Pip's soul and through this life-changing experience, Pip encountered the numinous. The two other people who have had similar experiences with the numinous are Ishmael and Fedallah.
