water, water, everywhere, so pip just decides to throw himself in it...(aka ch 93)

One of the oarsmen sprained his wrist and Pip replaced him. Being his first time in one of the row boats, Pip is quite suprised when the whale bumps the bottom of the boat right under him. So naturally, he decides to throw himself, and the oar, out of the boat, and somehow manages to get himself tangled up in the line that is attached to the whale. The whale, who is a bit surprised to have Pip join him in the water, swims off, which starts choking poor Pip! To save Pip, Stubb must cut the whale free. After "officially cursing" Pip, he warns him that if he jumps again, then they will leave him. True to his word, when Pip jumps again (oops), Pip is left sitting in the very big, very deep ocean. Naturally, Pip goes a bit coo coo (for cocopuffs!). When he gets back in the boat, the rest of the crew deem him insane, and life goes on.

This year we had a discussion about water, in short humans are seventy percent water and for some unknown reason humans tend to be drawn towards the water. The earth is over two thirds water.

What has Pip encountered? What has made him become mad? What kind of awesome experience is this?
Literally he has encountered the big blue, but metaphorically, he has experienced true autonomy. He was stranded without people, food, or even something to stand on. In mythology, when people traveled to the 'end of the world', they went mad, because there was nothing there; everything they knew was absent. Pip, too, has experienced the abyss of the sea, and was not able to mentally cope with it. Pip has never really in the water before, this is a revelation for him. It is something new to him, it makes him crazy because he feels like he will drown. He doesn't understand what this teaches him, because he is so young.
