Ch. 70 The Sphynx-Jessica Huff
Chapter 70 is entitled the Sphynx which is named after a creature that is half woman and half lion with wings. This chapter is mostly dealing with the beheading of a whale, which is actually quite difficult to acheive.
According to Encylcopedia Mythica, "the Greek sphinx was a demon of death and destruction and bad luck." The literal meaning of the word 'sphinx' is Greek meaing "to strangle." The sphinx is most often associated with the story of Oedipus. Oedipus encountered the sphinx and was able to answer her riddle, which kept him from death. The sphinx would eat anyone who was unable to answer her question; however, Oedipus was able to answer the question, which led to the downfall of the sphinx.
Melville incorporates the "sphynx" into Chapter 70. The allusion to the sphynx is significant because in Greek mythology, the sphynx was omnious and meant almost certain death. The sphynx can be compared to an obstacle that is nearly impossible to overcome. In relation to Moby Dick, Moby Dick may be the "sphynx" or obstacle that Ahab has to overcome. More than likely, Ahab will not be successful in overcoming this omnious creature, which will most likely lead to his downfall and death.
