The Virgin CH81- In the Bible, the virgin is Mary the mother of Jesus. She is the maternal figure for various cultures and in the Christian Church. In a more secular sense, the word "virgin" could be related to the characteristics of innocence, naiivity, and inexperience. In Moby Dick, the Virgin, or "Jungfrau" is not like the Biblical meaning of Virgin, but more like the secular meaning. The "Virgin" is a whaling ship full of inexperience; the crew is desperate to find whales but can not kill one. Also, the meeting of the Pequod, which represents experience, and the Virgin brings about the incident of the dead whale carcass that begins to sink te ship, as if it were getting revenge for its death.

The Jeroboam CH 71- Jeroboam in the Bible was the first king over the ten tribes of Israel that had broken away from the other tribes. His reign was plagued with war and conspiracy. Also, Jeroboam worshiped idols, even after being warned by the prophet Judah. When worshiping an idol at Bethel, Judah approached Jeroboam with a warning message from the Lord. Jeroboam tried to arrest the prophet, but his hands were dried up. Even after he regained his hands, he disregarded the miracle and continued to worship false idolatries. The Jeroboam in MOby Dick had a prophet on it named Gabriel, who prophesized the death of the former mate on his ship ,who was killed while hunting moby dick. Gabriel's prophecy had come true, and therefore the crew followed him as their leader. Gabriel warns Ahab about going after Moby Dick, reminding him about the mate who had been killed. Ahab ignores this warning, and the Pequod meets a violent end, as does Jeroboam in the Bible.

The Rachel CH128- In the Bible, Rachel was the second wife of Jacob who gave birth to two sons, Benjamin and Joseph, who both became important biblical figures and kings. Rachel loses both of her sons, one out of jealousy (he was sold into slavery) and the other for a short time. In Moby DIck, the captain of the Rachel has lost his son and begs Ahab to help him look for him. Ahab refuses, and the captain curses him and says he will not be forgiven.
