Archetypes by Kelsey Marsh
"Archetypes are, by definition, factors and motifs that arrange the psychic elements into certain images, characterized as archetypal, but in such a way that they can be recognized only from the effects they produce", in theory archetypes are similar to memories, they are pictures of intangible things in your mind, and because of the effect they have you can recognize such things, just like a memory. The memory comes to mind when you see something that has to do with that time, the effect of what you see remakes the realization to your brain. Ishmael is archetypal when he is staying the night at the Spouter Inn with Queequeg. Ishmael kept thinking about what Queequeg would be like, when Queequeg arrived Ishmael had taken the appearence of Queequeg into these images in his head. He pictured him in society wondering how weird people must have thought he was. The effect that Queequeg produced was fear. Ishamel is very arcetypal when he goes on his whaling journey.
