Ch. 73 - Lindsay Miller

In Chapter 73, one reads of Fedallah standing in the shadow of Captain Ahab. One could easily correlate this to aforementioned references to Jungian psychology. The mind has four archetypes: the Anima, Animus, the Shadow and the Ego. Fedallah stands in the shadow of Captain Ahab; he is Captain Ahab's Shadow. What does the Shadow do? The Shadow hides from the conscious mind everything taboo and bad, repressed memories and the like, from the conscious mind. Therefore, Fedallah is the personification of Captain Ahab's Shadow and that moreover binds them together permanently, in a psychological sense. the crew vaguely notices this in a preconscous sort of way and thus, have a feeling of foreboding about the sight of the two, one in the other's shadow, but that is all in regards to the crew and their perception of what is going on around them at this time.
