check it out! (end of chapter 73)
At the end of chapter 73, Fedallah stands in Ahab's shadow and looks past him to the whale's head. Fedallah looks repeatedly from the lines on his hand to the wrinkles on the whale's head. Fedallah is looking at the whale's head, but in particular the right whale's head. The Parsee, Fedallah, seems to occupy Ahab's shadow, which may symbolize that Fedallah occupies Ahab at times, and in order for Ahab to die, the Parsee will have to occupy Ahab. The shadows of Ahab and Fedallah seem to blend, making it seem as though Fedallah has ultimate control over the fate of Ahab or that Fedallah and Ahab are one. Together, Fedallah and Ahab lengthen their rule over the rest of the crew. In other words, Ahab seems to be the only one who is told by Fedallah what his fate will be. Fedallah is seeing his fate which is tied to the fate of the whale. Fedallah seems to own Ahab's soul. The shadows make it seem as Fedallah is Ahab and that Fedallah is a figment of Ahab's mind.
