Chapter 73- Alissa Davis
As Fedallah was standing in Ahab's shadow, his shadow blended with and lengthened Ahab's. In Jungian psychology, the shadow hides all the bad thoughts and memories that make up one's character. Fedallah represents Ahab's shadow(the mysterious and dark side of Ahab) and this along with the fact that their characters are dissimilar, binds them together. However, the two whales, the sperm whale and the right whale are unequal in value, much like Ahab comes before Fedallah in the ship's hierarchy. This idea is reinforced when Fedallah stands in Ahab's shadow, comparing the lines on his own hand to those on the right whale.
