Question #2 Ahab's Mark-Jessica Huff

Ahab has a "mark" or scar from head to toe. Although readers are unable to determine where the scar comes from, it serves a purpose. The scar is meant to protect Ahab, just as Cain's mark protected him. Cain's mark can be compared to a tribal mark, which purpose was to protect tribal members from murder. These tribal marks served as a deterrent from murders because they would see the mark and realize that the person would be avenged. Similarly, Ahab's mark could serve as a sign to warn Moby Dick that if he kills Ahab, that there will be a whole crew ready to kill him. Therefore, this mark is very important in protecting Ahab from Moby Dick; however, the origin of the mark is far less important

Okay. I hadn't thought of the scar as a mark to protect, but I see the analogy.
