Question #9 Fedallah-Jessica Huff

Chapter 50 starts to introduce the reader to Fedallah, a quite mysterious character. Although the reader does not learn much about Fedallah in this chapter, he is able to pick up an eery feeling about Fedallah. According to Gales Herman Melville Encyclopedia, Fedallah's name literally means "sacrifice or ransom of God." Gale's Herman Melville Encyclopedia continues to explain that this name is fitting for Melville's character Fedallah because he offers his life to destroy Ahab, which he sees as a sacrifice to better the crew. Fedallah is sacrificing his life to help the rest of the ship. In essence, Fedallah really is living up to the Arabic translation of his name.
