Rachel from the bible was married to Jacob and had difficulty baring children. Eventually she bore 2 children, Joseph and Benjamin. In Moby Dick, the captain of the Rachel asks Captain Ahab to help him find his son. He goes to this extreme measure, asking Ahab to give up his highest goal in life, finding Moby Dick, for the love of his son. Where as Rachel from the bible could not produce children, she was willing to give a concubine to her husband. She too was willing to go to these drastic measures in order to "find" a child. At the end of the novel when Ishmael was rescued by the Rachel, it was like Rachel was finding or even replacing her lost son. Genesis 35:17 states "And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid, for you have another son." As Rachel was losing her second born, she was instilling in someone else the life of her lost son.
Jeroboam from the bible was burning incense when a prophet appeared claiming that a king would appear and would restore worship of the true God. The alter cracked in order to burn the false priests at the altar. Jeroboam's hand froze while trying to stop the prophet. God resored the frozen hand and Jeroboam stayed steadfast in his ways. In Moby Dick, the prophet Gabriel on the boat Jeroboam was trying to warn the crew of the harsh journey that was to come. Neither the crew nor Joreboam listened to Gabriel and the prophet.
The boat Virigin is without oil and is having trouble catching whales. The captain aboards the Pequod and asks for helps from Ahab. The term virgin refers to being unexperienced. The Virgin is in need to help and of guidance. Similarly, the Virgin Mary had to be guided by God.
