Chapter 4- Alissa Davis

Joe Brown, also known as Lucas Burch, is the father of Lena Grove's child. He does not stay for long in one place and lives only for the moment, hoping to forget about the past.
Joe Christmas has no parents and he apparently grew up as an orphan. Since he is rootless, he is constantly moving, never staying in one place too long, almost as if he has no past.
Joanna Burden is an abolitionist who helped blacks and is therefore disliked by the entire town. She lived in the same house her whole life, but it is burned down by Christmas and Brown, as if they hope to destroy her past.
Thus, this is how their lives are connected. These people embody the nature of the human condition of alienation although they do not know it yet. They are not aware of how their past determines their present-day lives which is made apparent through the contradictory statements. Our past is connected to the present, which is connected to the future since the present will soon come to past. Our actions in the present shape our morals when they come to past, and these characters are merely trying to make the best of the present.
