Ch.4 Analysis Jessica Huff & Catherine Samson

Ishmael wakes up in the morning with Queequeg's arm across him as a wife would to a husband. He notes the arm is similar to a labyrinth and a patchwork quilt. The labyrinth that Ishmael references is a Cretan labyrinth which is a direct path although the path wanders to reach its destination. Ishmael says the arm reminds of a similar childhood experience. He describes a supernatural feeling that a hand was holding his as he woke up. He remembers wanting to escape but feeling unable and unwilling to move. This type of supernatural encounter is an example of a numinous experience. The numinous is a spiritual, supernatural power that seems unobtainable and controlling. This could be a recurring experience for Ishmael throughout the novel. Ishmael felt that Queequeg's embrace was a numinous touch. Ishmael attempts to wake Queequeg in order to rid himself of the numinous feeling. After repeated attempts, Queequeg finally wakes up and shakes himself like a "Newfoundland dog," a type of dog which is very fond of the water. Queequeg decides to get dressed and leave so Ishmael can get dressed in private. While this is happening we can see how savage yet civilized Queequeg is. He puts on a hat and boots, which are put on in much privacy under the bed, yet initially does not wear any pants. Ishmael urges him to hurry dressing and begins to watch Queequeg's odd way of washing himself. He washes everything but his face which seems unusual to Ishmael. Also puzzling Ishmael is the fact that Queequeg shaves with his harpoon. Finally Queequeg departs and leaves Ishmael in privacy.
