Chapter 8 employs the use of multiple tropes. It uses analogies, kennings, similes, onomatopoeias, alliteration, and much more. Some examples of tropes used in this chapter include:
-"omnipotent sea" (personification)
-"bowling-green" (kenning)
-"like a wild hen after her screaming brood" (simile)
-"Not the raw recruit, marching from the bosom of his wife into the fever heat of his first battle; not the dead man's ghost encountering the first unknown phantom in the other world" (analogy)
-"charmed, churned" (alliteration)
