Ahab's speech- Alissa Davis

The purpose of Ahab's speech about his life and his family is to see the human side of Ahab. The conflict between the captain and the first mate only worsens as time passes and they are still only chasing the white whale. Starbuck especially, even though the rest of the crew also thinks he is crazy, thinks that the only way for the ship to function as it should is to kill Ahab. Ahab admits that he has been out at sea so long, he often cannot control what happens and that he is driven by a force to catch Moby Dick. Therefore, Ahab only puts the whole crew in danger because he possesses some supernatural force of the sea. As he is speaking to Starbuck, more light is shed on why Ahab is the way he is and puts perspective on their whole situation.
