Pip vs Ahab - Patrick Collins
The relationship between Pip, who is at the bottom of the social heirarchy of the Pequod, and Ahab, who is at the top, is one that seems very unlikely. It is through most of the novel until Pip is left at sea when he jumps overboard. When this happens and he is rescued Ahab realizes that Pip is mad and sees a reflection of himself in the young tambourine boy. Just looking at the two one would think that they had nothing in common, and in fact they don't besides the fact that Ahab feels a special connection due to the maddness caused by the sea to Pip. Ahab takes Pip under his care and they become inseperable, which is strange considering the heirarchy of the Pequod, but nevertheless it is how things are.
