Ishmael's sense of worry has calmed down since he has seen Queequeg for more than a savage cannibal. The "melting" refers to a sense of warmness that Ishmael feels knowing that he and Queequeg have become friends. He says that he is making sense of these "strange feelings" he has about Queequeg, in the plaotnic sense. Queequeg has brought a true friendship into Ishmael's otherwise dismal life.
