Chapter 3- Kate Pennebaker

At the beginning of chapter three, Ishamel encounters a strange painting at the Spouter inn. which he describes as a "hyperborean winter scene." Hyperborean is defined as a very cold, frigid north wind. The painting is not of a winter scene, but the disorder reminds him of a crazy, windy wintertime storm. Ishmael later discovers that the painting is actually of a whale, caught in a storm, impaling itself upon the mast of a ship. He does not know what to make of the painting or what to think, but it could possiby be a foreshadowing of events to come. When Ishmael first meets Queequeg, he is sort of frightened by his appearance. Apparently, Queequeg is hard to look at, with his "purplish head" and dark greenish marked legs. Saying that he was hesitant to sleep in the same bed with him is an understatement. He called the landlord and made a big fuss and both Ishmael and Quuequeg got riled up and upset. The landlord is able to calm him down and Ishmael surprises himself by getting the "best" sleep he has ever had.
