Numinous is the wonder and awe one feels when in the presence of the . Though not immediately evident, with careful observation one can easily discover that the numinous is an underlying theme. Ishmael describes a moment in which he realizes that his hand is being held. He is confused as to what the "phantom" might be (in reference to the numinous). He awakes in Queequeg's embrace. He is in a state of sub-consciousness as when one is half asleep and half awake.
