Write a response to the following prompt:
In Chapter 10, Ishmael says: "...I began to be sensible of strange feelings. I felt a melting in me. No more my splintered heart and maddened hand were turned against the wolfish world. The soothing savage had redeemed it." He then reveals that the pagan has proved a friend and that "...Christian kindness has proved but hollow courtesy." And then their relationship is ritually sealed when Queequeg presses his forehead against Ishmael's and "said that henceforth we were married; meaning, in his country's phrase, that we were bosom friends; he would gladly die for me."
First, discuss what has happened to Ishmael psychologically, especially, the "melting" within. Second, what do you make of the "marriage"? In psychological terms, what has Ismael accepted? Why is he "redeemed"--ironically, if not oxymoronically--by a pagan?
Write in small groups and sign. Due at the end of class.
