A numinous experience is an “experience in which one seems to be aware of another as holy – an experience in which one seems to be aware of another as possessing at least one of the following six qualities: awefulness, majesty, energy, mystery, fascination, augustness.”
This definition parallels to Ishmael's experience as a child in the mysterious and possibly holy sense. Ishmael feels the hand of an unidentified person or object while he is confined in his room for sixteen long hours. This presence could be interpreted as the Hand of God upon Ishmael.
