Question #10 The Spirit-Spout -Jessica Huff
Chapter 51 is titled "The Spirit-Spout," which refers to this "jet" that Fedallah sees. Fedallah spots what he describes as a silvery jet, which is water shooting up from a whale. This becomes a continuous sight for the Pequod's crew. Ishmael believes that this "jet" is coming from Moby Dick and considers it alluring. Ishmael calls this sight a "spirit-spout" because it was a jet of water coming from the whale's (Moby Dick) blow or spout and because he seems to believe that this is the way that the spirits tempted the crew.
