Ch 10 Analysis (Brett and Libby)

"...I began to be sensible of strange feelings. I felt a melting in me. No more my splintered heart and maddened hand were turned against the wolfish world. The soothing savage had redeemed it," Ishmael reveals that its not a literal melting, but he feels a strong connection with Queequeg in the sense that he feels somewhat at home and ease with a fellow crew member. Ishmael's heart is not being withered away, but merely a sense that his heart has unhardened from being protected of what he gaurded it from. The marriage between Ishmael and Queequeg was not a romantic bond, but more of a spiritual and close friend type of kinship. They had all of the mental connections yet no physical love connection (knaw meann?).

You don't go deep enough here. Ishmael had had a life-changing experience in which he (a Christian) is symbolically married to a pagan to create a unity. What might this imply about 19th century American society? What are the implications?
