Question #7 By Alex Wikoff

In Chapter 42, the author goes into great detail about Moby Dick. The author does this using different poetic devices. It would seem that Moby Dick symbolizes power. Since Ahab seeks Moby Dick, we can conclude that Ahab is power hungry and is corrupted by the whale. In the Western Culture, the color white can symbolize power. If you will recall at the beginning of the Pequod's voyage Captain Ahab had the men drink from a cup containing some of his blood. In doing so it would seem that he has passed down his quest for power to the crew. The crew is now so focused upon the hunting down and capturing of the great white whale. Appearingly, Ahab has now passed down his quest for power to the crew of the Pequod. Thus is the whiteness of the whale.
